Let the Truth Be Told

Well, it looks like the toxic truth about mercury is coming out into the light of day! In March of 2004, the Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency released new advisories encouraging people to eat less seafood, and urged that women—particularly during pregnancy—and children limit their intake of certain types of mercury-rich fish such as sword and tile fish. Precautions for fishermen have filtered down to state and local levels as agencies warn against eating fish caught in local rivers, streams, and reservoirs because of mercury pollution.

Please be aware and remember that fish is only one way you get mercury into your body. Another route of greater magnitude and far greater concern is from our own dental amalgams.

The research has identified mercury fillings as major culprits in mercury toxification. It is an established fact that mercury can leech out from amalgams in the form of toxic vapors, leading to a myriad of potential medical problems. It is that very relationship between the mouth and the body which all researchers and physicians have discussed numerous times, that warrants requirements such as this. Did you know that in Germany, mercury amalgams are considered to be so dangerous that they have been banned from dental use? Similarly, the governments of Sweden and Japan restrict the use of amalgams containing mercury. Sadly, the American Dental Association (ADA) has dug in it heels so deeply to uphold the status quo in favor of mercury amalgams that it may take another generation of maladies caused by mercury toxification before we see any restrictions in the United States.

Just Say No to Amalgams

The bottom line is—don’t let anyone put metal fillings in your teeth or the teeth of anyone in your family. The dangers of doing so may not be immediate, or even three years from now, but metals such as mercury can eventually leak out of fillings and create problems. The particles from mercury are released from cracked, tired, oxidized amalgams—and the mercury vapors released with chewing—end up in your bloodstream where they can be driven to the surrounding tissues and even distant organs. There are some researchers and dentists that think that the amount of mercury in your brain is directly related to the number of fillings in your mouth.

There many dentists who say that amalgam fillings are 40-50 percent mercury. Doctor Mark Breiner, who is a well known holistic dentist, author and speaker, believes that any stimulation to the filling, whether it’s chewing, grinding, or drinking hot liquids, increases the amount of vapor released. The World Health Organization says that there is no safe level of mercury, so it is not acceptable to minimize the impact by rationalizing that it is only a small amount of mercury.

Extraordinarily Toxic in any Amount

Which two organs do you think are most vulnerable to mercury? The answer is the heart and the brain. If that is the case, it is safe to say that mercury is nothing to mess with. It is also alarming to realize that the rise in the incidence of congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation over the last few years might be a result of mercury toxicity on vulnerable heart cells. A lot of researchers think this problem is becoming more prevalent for several reasons: there are more people with aging, cracked amalgams; more people eat fish; and all water is becoming considerably more contaminated with mercury.

Doctor Boyd Haley is the Chairman of Biochemistry at the University of Kentucky and is very well versed on the subject of mercury toxicity and the brain. He has explained how mercury, and in particular mercury vapors, can destroy tubulin, the protective covering over nerve fibers. When unprotected and vulnerable nerve fibers are directly exposed to mercury vapors, the secretion of amyloid protein increases, eventually producing the amyloid plaque that destroys precious and vital brain tissue.

Amalgams are so toxic that when removed from the mouth, they are considered highly toxic waste by the Environmental Protection Agency and must be handled in a certain way to protect dental office personnel from mercury poisoning. “Many dentists know the dangers of removal and recommend leaving the amalgams in, believing it is healthier to maintain toxic waste dumps in human mouths.”

This is why mercury is a major risk factor in the development of amyloid plaques typical of Alzheimer’s disease. Just remember that mercury vapor is colorless, tasteless, and odorless, so it is not as if you are going to be warned ahead of time that you are inhaling it into your lungs. Once in your lungs, mercury particles are picked up by the bloodstream and distributed into body tissue.

There are some telltale signs that you or someone you love may be mercury toxic. One example may be someone who is chronically ill or has bizarre symptoms that have stumped the best of conventional and alternative physicians. Mercury toxicity should be considered—especially if they have a mouth full of amalgams. The list of symptoms includes:

• Psychological disturbances
• Neurological disturbances
• Respiratory problems
• Gastrointestinal problems
• Unexplained muscle weakness
• Unexplained fatigue
• Unexplained exhaustion
• Tremors

This is just to name a few and while these could be caused by a variety of factors, it is important to consider the possibility of insidious mercury toxification. Pay particular attention if your quality of life continues in a downward spiral with no tangible explanation.

Not to be Taken Lightly

Mercury poisoning is a very real and serious problem. Please be cognizant of what you put in your mouth and take responsibility for at least trying to limit your dietary exposure to mercury. You can reduce your fish consumption to once a week, unless you know for sure that the fish has been stringently rested for mercury. There are good, well-tested brands such as Sea Bear, and Vital Choice.

If you are unsure about how much mercury or other heavy metals you may have accumulated within your body, a good way to be certain is to be tested for it. There are simple at home test kits that can give a fairly reliable gauge as to the presence of toxic heavy metals in your system, or for a precise measurement of each toxic metal deposit within your body, a service performed by a reputable lab would be necessary.

Should you or your loved one confirm that you are toxic, or you just want to be proactive and seek preventative measures, seek a biological dentist to discuss amalgam removal. If you wish to investigate a dentist who can help you, please check the International Academy on Oral Medicine and Toxicology. The IAOMT also has some extremely scary scientific video footage of mercury vapor being released from an amalgam filling that we suggest you take a look at.

There are steps you can take right now to eliminate mercury and other heavy metals toxification from your body. LL Magnetic Clays are highly effective and less invasive than procedures such as EDTA, which is long term, very expensive and very time consuming. Additionally many individuals have had great success with oral chelation formulas such as BioChelat.

Lastly, foods that are rich in sulfur—such as garlic, scallions and onions can have a chelating (removal) effect on mercury as well. Greens like cilantro, chlorella, and algae are also very helpful.
