Anticoagulant Warfarin Tied to Brain Hemorrhaging

Filed under: Research & Studies — Judy Phillips @ 11:06 pm

When I opened the newspaper this morning and sat down to have my cup of green tea, a headline grabbed my attention.  Thought you might be interested in the latest pharmaceutical fiasco.  According to a new study conducted by scientists at the University Of Cincinnati College Of Medicine, the use of the anticoagulant warfarin, which rose in the 1990’s, produced an upsurge in the number of drug-induced intracerebral hemorrhages—particularly in senior citizens over 80.  They maintained that elderly people who take the popular blood-thinning medicine to prevent heart attacks or strokes might be at greater risk for serious brain hemorrhage.

“We’ve had no idea how often this was happening,” said Dr. Matthew Flaherty, lead author of the study that appears in the journal Neurology.  Utilization of the blood thinner escalated after many studies showed warfarin was effective at inhibiting ischemic strokes in people with atrial fibrillation, an abnormal heart rhythm.

The latest study indicates warfarin, which is sold under numerous brands including Coumadin, may bring about problems of it own.  “The benefit comes with a potential price, the risk of a brain bleed,” Flaherty said.  Ischemic strokes are triggered by a blood clot that forms in the brain or travels to the brain.  The less common type of stroke (less than 10% of all strokes) is an intracerebral hemorrhage—a blood vessel bursting in the brain.

Preliminary studies indicated that warfarin was a good preventative measure, better than aspirin or placebo.  The Cincinnati scientists, however, were the first to quantify how often a drug-related hemorrhage occurs in a large population.  The scientists checked all the hospital admissions during the late 1980’s and 1990’s and discovered the incidence of warfarin-related cerebral hemorrhages spiked over that time.  In particular, people over the age 80 were especially vulnerable.

From 1988 to 1999, the occurrence jumped from 2.5 per 100,000 patients to 45.9.  When you do the math, it equates to a fourfold increase in the incidence among all ages, from 0.8 to 4.4 per 100,000.  The physicians say the advantages of using warfarin in seniors might not be worth the risk.

“We need to know who is likely to benefit and who is likely to be harmed,” Flaherty said.  The risk of ischemic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation is still much higher than the risk of a drug-related brain hemorrhage, he added.  He cautioned patients to talk to their doctors before making any decision not to take warfarin.

  1. would you be able to tell me what to do for this condition:

Hello my name is Connie D’Ambrosio, my email address is connie2794@optonline.net please read this note…I am slowly dying…This is not a hoax not made up story it is the honest truth,

On July 1st 2007 I was kidnapped and dragged into North Shore hospital, in Manhasset.
    1. I was drugged by Dr. Nicholas Craig of Port Jefferson NY, George Lutz, and George Godberson and Associates, private investigators hired by Dr. Craig, plus other friends, including his friends in the police department.

    2. I was kept in the hospital for three weeks, I was sedated and I was injected with something on my arm, mold or fungus, radiation, don’t really know it left a huge bruise for 2 weeks and it traveled through my body and head..

    3. I was also injected with some other drug intramuscular in gluteus.

    4. Then they conducted a cat scan of the head, which was kept on my head at the highest level of radiation until my head began to burn.

    5. I felt a lump in my throat when I tried to eat.

    6. They kept giving me breads, pizza, cheeses, pasta cake, fried foods and ice cream to eat. My head felt worse when I ate.

    7. Right now I can’t eat anything can’t hold any food down in my stomach and lost 20 lb within 1 month.

    8. When I sleep my head burns, and I can feel the burn there is an odor that comes out of my head, like I am frying, and burning my brain.

    9. Food makes, my head burn more, feels like my brain is frying. There is burning odor coming from inside my head, I feel myself cooking, and I am in a lot of pain. The burning gets worse when I eat. know it seems hard to believe, it’s the truth.

    10. I have metal and smoke like taste in my mouth, my nose burns, my arms and legs are numb and they burn and hurt, I can barely walk, I lost part of my hearing, my eyes are blurry and they burn, are red and feel like there is sand in them; I feel dizzy and week, I am loosing my memory slowly.

    11. I don’t know what they did to me or if it can be fixed, I have been trying tirelessly to seek medical attention, and every time I try Dr. Craig and his associates intercept me.

    12. Dr. Craig and his friends intercept my emergency room visits, and my private Dr. Visits I can’t get any medical help.

    13. I am mistreated and discarded. They threaten me to be thrown in a psych ward. Sometimes the doctors are nice, take blood work and tell me I am fine, and there is nothing wrong.

    14. I went to Manhattan to seek medical attention and he intercepted that visit also. I made appointments under a different name, but didn’t work I keep getting intercepted. He knows where I am at all times…

    15. I went to see a psychic healer, and he intercepted her as well.

    16. I need help, I don’t want to die and I am so afraid on what is happening to me. I am Loosing my hearing, my sight, my limbs are paralyzing. Its scary and I am all alone

    17. I feel like my brain is dying slowly, and I am dying, it is affecting my nervous system and slowly killing my senses.

    18. My brothers, sister, and children are also keeping me from seeking medical help. Family members are selling my house furniture and personal belongings, as if I were already dead.

    19. I have been staying in a hotel room for a week so far, and took a leave of absence from work. I have no income at the moment; I am living off of my savings. I am so afraid, and feel helpless.

    20. I don’t know what else to do; I am hoping you will forward this to the proper authorities. Someone needs investigate this properly.

    21. I don’t have much time left; I am hoping someone will help me. I haven’t had anything to eat in five days, am week and dizzy.

    22. Dr. Craig and his associates use disguises to change their appearances, I think its theatrical make up, he can make himself look like someone else and he can also change his voice,

I know this is hard to believe it is the truth…I have nothing to gain from this. I want the world to know what happened to me. And hopefully be able to get some help without him intercepting doctor’s visits and interfere with the hospital staff.
Dr. Craig and his friends are the only people who know exactly what drugs were given to me. “This man is going to commit the perfect murder”
