| Calendula Overview: Contains the powerful antioxidants Lutein and Zeaxanthin. These powerful antioxidants belong to a special group of fat-soluble phytochemicals called carotenoids, and are extracted from the calendula, otherwise known as the marigold plant. These two carotenoids are concentrated in the human lens and macula, and form the macular pigment, which helps protect the retina from oxidative damage. They are uniquely able to absorb the most damaging portions of the light spectrum, helping to protect the lens, retina, and macula. In fact, Zeaxanthin and Lutein have been called "conditionally essential nutrients" because of their critical protective functions in the eye. High concentrations of these pigments are said to protect the eyes from developing age-related macular degeneration and cataracts as well as defend your cells from the damaging effects of free radicals.
